This is a report on the translation of Why Travel? Understanding Our Need to Move and How It Shapes Our Lives, edited by Matthew Niblett and Kris Beuret,of which Chapter 6 and 7 are the source text.As an informative text with natural and objective language, along with strong logic in arguments, the source text discusses people’s root motivation of travel from the perspective of sociology, and people’s fundamental desire for religious travel. The translator chose Peter Newmark’s Communicative Translation Theory as the guiding theory. This translation report provides an introduction to the project, followed by an analysis of the source text.It also describes the translation difficulties and the approaches taken by the translator, based on a review of the dominant translation theory. The difficulties lie in specialized terminology and proper nouns such as place names, organization names, sociological and religious terms. The methods include domestication, conversion and reversion, etc.
