| As significant resource for children’s education, many excellent literary works for children entered the vision of Chinese translators and readers. The British children’s literary novel The House with Chicken Legs, with its distinctive language characteristics and rich cultural connotations, has been supported by English readers since its publication in 2018,and won the British Carnegie Prize for Children’s Literature in 2019.The purpose of this translation report is to conduct Chinese translation though analyzing the English children’s literature, focusing on translating various kinds of culture-loaded words. This report adopts Nida’s classification of culture-loaded words: material culture-loaded words, religious culture-loaded words, social culture-loaded words, ecological culture-loaded words, and linguistics culture-loaded words. And through Newmark’s communication translation, the original text is defined as popular fiction, which is belongs to the vocative texts.Communicative translation is dominated by target readers, trying to make the effect produced by the readers’ translation as close as possible to the effect produced by the original readers, reflecting the translation characteristics of domestication. Also, considering the target readers are children around 12 years, the translator attaches great importance to their cognitive ability and learning needs and mainly adopts amplification translation of the material culture-loaded words, extension translation of the religious culture-loaded words, paraphrase of liberal translation of the social culture-loaded words, annotation free translation of the ecological culture-loaded words, transliteration of the linguistics cultureloaded words. While meeting the reading needs of target readers, this translation report retains its original literary value as much as possible.I hope this report can provide a reference for the translation of culturally loaded words in children’s literature. |
