A Report On The Chinese-English Translation Of The Improvement Of People’s Livelihood And Development Of Education:Based On The Research Of Southwest Ethnic Areas (Excerpts) From The Perspective Of Communicative Translation Theory

Ethnic culture has been one of the hot spots of social science research in China in recent years.The traditional ethnic culture is an essential part of excellent Chinese culture.Inheriting ethnic culture is conducive to enhancing the cohesion and vitality of the Chinese nation and promoting the prosperity and development of ethnic minority areas.The translator chooses Section 2,Section 3 and Section 4 in Chapter 3 of The Improvement of People’s Livelihood and Development of Education: Based on the Research of Southwest Ethnic Areas as the source text of this translation practice,which mainly discusses the crisis faced by the inheritance of ethnic culture in Southwest China and explores various educational paths for transmitting ethnic culture,aiming to let people around the world understand the ethnic culture of Southwest China and find a suitable way to transmit ethnic culture effectively.The source text is the fact-based informative text.The translator adopts Peter Newmark’s communicative translation theory to guide the translation practice.Combining the characteristics of the source text and the differences between Chinese and English,the author discusses the translation strategies at the three levels of vocabulary,sentence,and text.At the lexical level,literal translation,free translation,literal translation with annotation and transliteration with annotation are adopted to translate culture-loaded words and four-character words,aiming to convey the connotative meaning of words accurately.At the sentence level,for the translation of long and difficult sentences and non-subject sentences,the translator adopts translation methods such as splitting,voice conversion,subject supplement,and word-order change to make the translation smoother and more natural and easily accepted by the target readers.At the discourse level,the translator adopts cohesive devices such as reference and conjunction to make the translation more logical and coherent.This translation report is divided into five parts:task introduction,theoretical basis,translation process,case study,and practice summary.The significance of this translation practice can be seen mainly in the following two aspects.Firstly,it is conducive to promoting the spread of ethnic culture in Southwest China and enhancing our country’s cultural confidence.Second,it is conducive to enriching the research of communicative translation theory and providing certain reference values for the translation practice of the same type of text.
