| This report is based on the translation of section C of Nuclear weapons law:Where are we now? written by William H.Boothby and Wolff Heintschel von Heinegg and published in 2022 by Cambridge University Press.The source text discusses the law on resorting to the use of force.The source text features multiple nominalized structures,multiple emphatic sentence structures,and multiple complex sentences with attributive clauses.These linguistic features are closely related to the translation difficulties the translator encountered in the translation process that entail the translator’s attention and efforts to deal with.This translation project is to enrich the literature on nuclear weapons law and related fields and can provide a reference for readers who want to get acquainted with nuclear weapons law.This translation project aims to convey the message of the source text accurately and,at the same time,take into account the reading habits of the target language readers.The translator takes Catford’s translation shifts theory as guidance and uses conversion to replace a large number of nominalized structures in English sentences into verbs frequently used in Chinese,amplification to express the grammatical concepts of the source explicitly,and restructuring to divide the long English sentences into several Chinese clauses and arrange them according to the logic sequence of Chinese sentence structure.The above translation techniques contribute to the readability of the target text and help the translator fully convey the information of the source text. |
