A Report On The Translation Of Bad Data: Why We Measure The Wrong Things And Often Miss The Metrics That Matter(Chapter 2)

This translation project is a conclusion of two-year translation study and a significant part of the postgraduate career.In order to make a systematic generalization,this report takes chapter Two “The Ins and Outs: The Logic Model and Program Evaluation” from the book Bad Data: Why We Measure the Wrong Things and Often Miss the Metrics That Matter as a sample to conduct a deeper research.The chapter centers on some wrong measurements frequently seen in our daily work,and the author Peter Schryvers takes some examples to explain the reasons resulting in data misuse,and then offers some inspiring solutions to tackle those problems.Chapter two of this book mainly discusses how to evaluate a project in a logical way,so many terms and sentences of passive voice are inevitably involved.Under the guidance of Peter Newmark’s Communicative Translation Theory,the translator sums up the difficulties encountered in the translation from two aspects.From lexical level,there are some words without equivalents in Chinese,or one word with multiple equivalences of the same meaning in Chinese.In order to convey the content accurately,the translator takes acceptability and readability into account,and adopts Addition of Category Word and Conversion to address those problems.In terms of syntax,considering the author aims to promote information sharing,the translator manages to make passive sentences or long sentences with complicated structures more understandable in Chinese by using Amplification,Restructuring and Change of Voice,striving to convey the content that the author of the source text intended.
