A Report On E-C Translation Of The Bidding Document On Lanzhou Urban Rail Transit Line 2 Phase 1 (An Excerpt From Chapter Eight)

In recent years,there is a heat in the bidding projects among the international and domestic trades.As a result,the demand for the translation of the bidding document has been increasing.Different from the translation of literary works,this type of translation features strong professionalism and accuracy.Thus,the translation of the bidding document becomes more and more important in the international trades.Commissioned by the Lanzhou Trans Co.,Ltd,the translator chooses an excerpt from Chapter Eight in The Bidding Document on Lanzhou Urban Rail Transit Line 2Phase 1 as the source text to translate.Based on the whole process of translation,the translator writes this report.The report is divided into five parts.The first part contains the introduction and significance of the translation task.The second part analyzes the vocabulary,sentence structure and discourse of the source text.Meanwhile,the requirements from the entrusting party are expounded.The third part is the translation process during the task implementation,including three parts: pre-translation,midtranslation and post-translation.The stage of the preparation is to analyze the source text and collect the background information.Also,the translator studies the translation theory to guide the task,namely Nord’s principle of function plus loyalty.Then the translator begins to translate the text under the guidance of this theory,and solves the specific difficulties and problems encountered in the translation process.After translation,the translator proofreads the target text for multiple times,then asks the peers to revise the translation.The text is evaluated by the entrusting party.The fourth part is the specific cases analysis.In this part,the translator discusses the cases from the lexical,syntactic and textual level.The fifth part is a conclusion and reflection about the translation task.Nord’s principle of function plus loyalty proposes that translators should be faithfully responsible for all parties in the translation process and make the target text achieve the same function as the original.Guided by this principle,the translation skills of addition,inversion,ellipsis and voice conversion are adopted to deal with the problems in the terminologies,complex sentences,passive sentences,cohesion and coherence.Combined with the unique language features of the source text,the principle of function plus loyalty can guide the translation of such bidding documents and make the target text more in line with the idiomatic expressions.Through the detailed case analysis,the translator hopes this report can provide some references for bidding documents translation in future.
