Translation Practice Report-A Case Study On The E-C Translation Of Paving Of Sanniquellie-Loguauto Road Section Bidding Document For Procurement Of Works (Part 3)

This paper is an English-Chinese translation report.The translation material is excerpted from the third part in Paving of Sanniquellie-Loguauto Road Section Bidding Document for Procurement of Works,which is an international bidding document facing a wide range of bidding groups.The bidding documents have a large amount of information and involve various groups.They are typical English for Science&Technology(EST),aiming to accurately transmit the information of terms and regulations to bidders.EST is other than literary works,which is objective,concise and rigorous.Therefore,its translation emphasizes more on the accuracy of information transmission and the normalization of expression.According to Text Type Theory of Peter Newmark,the British translator,the core of informative text is the real world out of language,which is more appropriate for communicative translation.Newmark pointed out that communicative translation means that the effect of the target language on the target readers should be as much as that of the source language on the original readers.It focuses on the acceptability of the target readers and emphasizes the transmission of information in accordance with the culture and pragmatics of the target language.In view of situation above,based on the in-depth analysis of the original text,the translator analyzes and explains the characteristics of the bidding documents from the aspects of lexical and syntactical level by combing with her own practice.Guided by Newmark’s Communicative Translation Theory and combined with specific case studies,a number of practical translation strategies and methods are proposed,such as adjusting word order,division,conversion and literal translation,etc.On the basis of reading a lot of parallel texts and using translation tools,the translator carefully considers the translation of terminology,negative transfer sentences and other difficult sentences in the original text.Based on Newmark’s Communicative Translation Theory,the translator makes a preliminary study and exploration on the translation of the bidding document.Moreover,the translator puts forward some effective translation skills and methods to be adopted in the translation,aiming to provide some references for the translation and research of such texts.
