Research On Subtitle Translation Methods From The Perspective Of Multimodal Discourse Analysis

The mutual exchanges of audiovisual products at home and abroad have emerged in recent years.Documentary work is a kind of film or TV art that uses real life as the creative material,and takes real people and real events as the object of expression.The Battle of Chosin is an American-made historical documentary about the Korean War.The main watching point of the program is the authentic and credible documentary photographing methods on the battlefield.It has important reference value for understanding the attitude of the United States towards the Korean War.This study takes the multimodal discourse analysis framework as the theoretical guidance,builds a thesis framework with modality relations as the branches,and discusses the translation methods of this film.The analyzable dimensions of multimodal discourse are extensive,and involve multi-sensory collaboration such as audiovisual sensory in form,language function and culture in content.This paper attempts to combine different senses and different types of symbolic resources,and explores the process of meaning-building of symbolic resources and the translation methods of the translator.The framework structure of this paper takes professor Zhang Delu’s modality relationship as the guidance,refers to Delabastita’s(1989)classification method of audiovisual translation,further divides the translator’s translation methods into five categories: repetition,addition,omission,transformation,and substitution.Besides,records and statistics are made through the Elan modality annotation tool,and the paper finally shows the modality relationship and translation characteristics through examples.It shows that from the perspective of modality enhancement under the complementary relationship,addition,transformation and substitution are the main translation methods.The translation methods of non-enhancement modality under the complementary relationship are mainly addition and omission.For the noncomplementary relationship,there is no fixed pattern for translation methods,but it is necessary to consider avoiding the vagueness of overlapping modality.
