This report is a practice report of the C-E translation based on Laying Siege to the“Ace Division” of the U.S.Army— the Record of the Battle of Chosin for Resisting U.S.Aggression and Aiding DPRK written by Shao Zhiyong,a professor from National Defense University.As we all know,the translation of the military text is extremely significant regarding national defense.Translation studies have achieved much progress in various fields in China in recent years,but the study of translating military is still insufficient.Therefore,it is necessary to translate the military text to offer some references to the related fields and attract more foreigners to understand the Battle of Chosin.The source text is a military-related text,which highlights accuracy and faithfulness.By reviewing the translation process,linguistic features of the source text are summarized with particular emphasis on the translation difficulties in terms of vocabulary,syntax,and discourse.At the lexical level,the culture-loaded words,and Chinese four-character idioms are translated with the methods of paraphrasing and footnotes.At the syntactical level,addition,omission,and combination are utilized to deal with the translation problems of sentences with no subject,redundant sentences,and Chinese short sentences.At the discourse level,coherence and cohesion are considered by amplification and conversion.Based on the reflection of the translation project,the author postulates that a qualified translator should have a comprehensive understanding of translation concerning the purpose,function,and readability of the target text.This report aims to introduce the Korean War and further study the translation methods and skills that could be utilized in the related text,to improve the translator’s translation ability and make some contributions to the related fields.
