| The import and export of foreign audiovisual products are increasingly common among Chinese audiences.Film,as a comprehensive art,acts as a prominent carrier of languages,cultures,ideologies,and values.Qualified subtitles will be the icing on the cake for a film on account of their crucial role in promoting the development of plots,shaping characters,and revealing obscure messages.In the thesis,the author takes the Chinese-English subtitle translation of Everything,Everywhere,All at Once as a case study,and discusses the challenges and strategies in the film subtitle translation,in an attempt to provide some inspiration and reference for translators intending to engage in subtitle translation.The thesis begins with an introduction to the translation project Everything,Everywhere,All at Once and then discusses the challenges posed before translators including multi-modal constraints,requirement of distinct language features of characters and improper handling of culture and error-prone ideological interpretation and output.Combined with thorough analysis of the case,the author proposes tentative and corresponding strategies: addition,subtraction,and word order adjustment;naturalization;literal translation,free translation and appropriate rewriting. |
