Abstract/Summary:
The relationship between language and culture is inseparable.Every language has its specific cultural background.English teaching is both language teaching and cultural teaching.Cultural awareness is one of the four core English competencies.English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2022 edition)clearly points out that one of the general goals of English curriculum is to cultivate students’ cultural awareness,and puts forward specific goals towards cultural awareness learning.Cultural teaching is not only an inevitable subject and important means to cultivate students’ cultural awareness.It is also a key measure to promote the formation and development of students’ English core competencies.Cultural teaching can enrich students’ cultural knowledge,deepen student’s understanding of Chinese and foreign cultures,in-turn enhancing students’ intercultural communication awareness and intercultural communication abilities.In this study,literature analysis,questionnaire survey,interview and other research methods were used to define and sort out relevant concepts and theories.On the basis of defining and sorting out relevant concepts and theories,the main dimensions of studying the current situation of English cultural teaching in primary schools were determined,and the questionnaire and interview outline of the current situation of English cultural teaching in primary schools were compiled.In addition,some teachers and students of three primary schools in X City were studied under close investigation.Based on the results of questionnaires and interviews,this thesis analyzes the current situation of teachers’ cultural literacy;teachers’ cognition and attitude towards cultural teaching;cultural teaching content and cultural teaching methods and cultural teaching evaluation.The result proposes optimization strategies for primary school English cultural teaching in views of the existing problems and related causes in primary school English cultural teachings.Through the investigation,it is found that there are the following problems in the current English cultural teaching in primary schools: the lack of teachers’ own cultural literacy;weak consciousness of cultural teaching practice;Chinese culture teaching needs to be strengthened;culture teaching method is singular and such cultural teaching evaluation is not optimal.In view of the current situation and problems,the following five optimization strategies can be implemented in English cultural teaching in primary schools:The first is to improve the cultural literacy of English teachers,including reforming teacher training mode,enriching teachers’ cultural knowledge and broadening teachers’ learning channels;the second is to actively practice the concept of cultural teaching,including setting up correct cultural teaching concepts,setting clear cultural teaching objectives,strengthening effective cultural teaching reflections;the third is to improve the intensity of Chinese culture education,including the construction of mother tongue cultural identity,integration of Chinese cultural elements,pay attention to Chinese culture investigations;the fourth is to optimize the methods of cultural teaching,including the use of cultural penetration,the creation of situational role play,cultural practice activities;the fifth is to improve the evaluation system of cultural teaching,including the diversification of evaluation subjects and evaluation methods.
