According to the General High School English Curriculum Standards,the English curriculum concept is led by themes,the curriculum content is based on discourse,and the curriculum format is presented in units.It is also clearly proposed to pay attention to the meaning of the theme,to set the overall teaching objectives of the unit which point to the English discipline key competencies,and to design learning activities based on the thematic context of the whole unit.At the same time,the New Curriculum also suggests that high school English textbooks should be flexible,which means the selection and arrangement of textbook content should leave some room for teachers to add,delete,and adjust teaching materials on their own.Therefore,English teachers should not be limited to the teaching of the textbook discourse,but should adjust,replace,delete or supplement the textbook discourse.The foreign current periodicals are high-quality texts that meet the requirements of the New Curriculum,and they are easily accessible and up-to-date,so they are suitable as teaching texts to supplement or replace the textbook texts.According to Gestalt psychology and Krashen’s language learning theory,the language teaching content should be presented to students in a whole form,the teaching content should be planned and designed as a whole,and the language learning materials should be comprehensive,interesting,relevant and authentic.Based on the two theories,this thesis conducts a semester-long action research on the integration of foreign current periodicals into the overall teaching design of high school English units,using questionnaires,interviews,and tests.This thesis takes 50 senior one students as the research object,and aims to study the following two questions: 1.How to design and implement the overall unit teaching that incorporates foreign current periodicals in senior high school? 2.What are the effects of implementing an overall unit teaching that incorporates foreign current periodicals on high school students’ English learning performance and attitude towards English learning? The thesis has designed an action plan based on the research framework and continued to improve the action plan through classroom practice and student feedback.The thesis has analyzed the questionnaires,interviews and test data and come to the following conclusions: students’ interest and attitude towards English learning have increased,their English discipline key competencies have developed,and their test scores in English have improved after the integration of the foreign periodical texts into the overall unit teaching.The set of practical teaching strategies and teaching steps for the integration of foreign current periodicals into the overall teaching of the unit that the thesis has summarized will be of reference significance for high school English teachers in designing the integration of foreign current periodicals into the overall teaching of the unit.
