The General Senior High School English Curriculum Standards(2020)proposes the thematic meaning and sets Unit Teaching objectives oriented toward core competencies.Unit is a relatively complete study unit that carries thematic meaning,and it considers the subject nurturing value and significance of the unit’s teaching content from a holistic perspective and helps students develop a comprehensive and in-depth understanding in discourse learning.However,the current English reading teaching neglects to develop students’ reading ability and good reading habits,which leads to problems such as fragmentation,superficiality and lack of integrity.In this study,two rounds of action research were conducted with forty students in Grade one from a senior high school in Shenyang.This study applies Unit Teaching from the perspective of Holistic Foreign Language Teaching to the reading teaching.The questionnaire,interview,test,and teaching reflection journal are used to collect data,and these data are quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed to understand the impact of Unit Teaching from the perspective of Holistic Foreign Language Teaching in senior high school English reading teaching.The research questions of the study are:(1)What are the effects of Unit Teaching on senior high school students’ reading comprehension ability from the perspective of Holistic Foreign Language Teaching?(2)What are the effects of Unit Teaching on senior high school students’ reading habits from the perspective of Holistic Foreign Language Teaching?The results of the study show that Unit Teaching from the perspective of Holistic Foreign Language Teaching has a positive impact on students’ English reading comprehension ability and reading habits.On the one hand,it helps students to comprehend the content comprehensively,understand the deeper meaning of the discourse,form complete knowledge systems and achieve “holistic input” and“holistic output.” On the other hand,Unit Teaching also improves students’ reading behaviors,increases their reading quantity and frequency,thus helps students to develop good reading habits.This study improves the problem of fragmentation and superficiality in reading teaching by implementing Unit Teaching from the perspective of Holistic Foreign Language Teaching,and it also improves students’ reading comprehension ability and reading habits.At the same time,it also provides a new teaching practice path for reading teaching.
