With the continuous development of “the Belt and Road”,the economic cooperation and cultural exchanges between China and other countries,and cross-cultural communication has become increasingly frequent.The phenomenon of “Chinese culture aphasia” put forward by Professor Cong(2000)makes people realize the importance of Chinese culture in English teaching.The complementary relationship between language and culture also determines the urgency of integrating Chinese culture into English teaching.The New English Curriculum Standards for Senior High Schools(2017,revised in 2020)requires students to have a deep understanding of socialist values,carry forward Chinese excellent traditional culture,revolutionary culture,an advanced socialist culture,and improve students’ cross-cultural communication ability and the ability to spread Chinese excellent culture.To achieve these goals,it is necessary to integrate Chinese culture into senior high school English teaching.Based on cross-cultural communication theory,input theory and relevant research on cultural teaching at home and abroad,by means of questionnaire survey and interview,the thesis investigates the current situation of Chinese culture’s integration into English teaching in Zhangjiakou No.1 Senior Middle School,aiming to explore three questions:1.What is the current situation of the integration of Chinese culture into senior high school English teaching?2.What are the factors that influence the integration of Chinese culture in senior high school English teaching?3.What strategies can improve the integration of Chinese culture into senior high school English teaching?The results show that most teachers and students have a positive attitude towards the integration of Chinese culture into senior high school English teaching.However,in the teaching process,there are problems such as insufficient integration of Chinese culture into teaching and single teaching method.Both teachers and students consider that the content of Chinese culture in textbooks cannot meet the needs of teaching and learning.Students’ ability to describe Chinese culture in English is weak,and teachers are not satisfied with the teaching effect of integrating Chinese culture at present.According to the interviews,the integration of Chinese culture is not satisfactory due to the superficial understanding of the integration of Chinese culture,students’ low English proficiency,the shortage of class hours and the great pressure of college admission,the insufficient related teaching and learning resources,and teachers’ inadequate literacy of Chinese culture and other factors,and the overall situation of the integration of Chinese culture into senior high school English teaching needs to be improved.Based on the results of the current situation and influencing factors of the integration of Chinese culture into English teaching in senior high schools,some improvement strategies are put forward: first,attaching importance to the professional development of teachers to improve their teaching ability of Chinese culture;second,developing various activities and courses to enrich the resources of Chinese culture curriculum;third,strengthening the construction of teaching materials to reasonably integrate the content of Chinese culture;fourth,establishing a cultural evaluation system to highlight the backwash effect of evaluation;fifth,reforming the examination content to include Chinese culture in the academic proficiency test and college entrance examination;and sixth,cultivating students’ cross-cultural communication ability to spread excellent Chinese culture.Finally,the limitations of the study are discussed and the future research on Chinese culture teaching in senior high school English is prospected.
