A Report On The E-C Translation Of Coal Mine Gas Control And Utilization(Excerpts) Under The Guidance Of Reiss’s Text Type Theory

The present translation task is based on the English book of coal engineering,named Coal Mine Gas Control and Utilization.The book mainly discusses the basic engineering knowledge and applications of coal seam gas hazard prevention and control.It plays an important role in guiding the prevention and control of gas explosion accidents,reducing casualties and achieving safe production in coal mines.Since coal engineering is still an indispensable part in the social development of our country,the translation task is of great significance in enhancing the studies of coal mining safety.The report starts with the characteristics of specialized vocabulary and complex syntax of coal engineering English.According to Katharian Reiss’ s text type theory,the source text in the present translation task belongs to the informative text,which expounds in details on gas explosion prevention and control,and evaluation of coalbed methane reservoirs as well.Since the text focuses on the description of the informational content,concise and plain language is required in translating,logic coherence is achieved by using methods such as omitting conjunctive words and adjusting sentence orders.Challenges encountered in the translation process include terminologies,regulations with mining engineering English characteristics,long sentences and some lexical expressions.Based on the theory,the translator adopts specific translation methods and skills such as splitting up long sentences,free translation,division,omission and so on,so as to achieve the four translation standards of accuracy,fluency,logicality and conciseness.Through innovating and concluding the methods and skills,this translation practice and report analyze and discuss how text type theory could guide mining engineering English,hoping to provide reference for subsequent translation and research.
