A Report On Escort Interpreting In Chengdu Research Base Of Giant Panda Breeding

With the further development of globalization,escort interpreting is playing an increasingly prominent role during the exchanges and cooperation between China and other countries,since the proficiency of interpreters determines the success and failure of a business trade to a large extent.This thesis is a report based on the author’s escort interpreting practice in Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding,and the thesis states the proper initiative and flexibility of an interpreter under the guidance of Interpretive Theory,which describes how the author made sufficient preparations including glossary building,parallel text analysis and cognitive supplement.Moreover,it describes how the author communicated with the client and the tour guide carefully in advance,so as to collect adequate preparations of escort interpreting in tourism to a large extent.In the interpreting process,two steps from the Interpretive Theory were taken:de-verbalization and reformulation.With a thorough understanding of the source speech,the author summarized a couple of interpreting skills to cope with tedious information chunk and scattered sentences,including generalization,explanation,non-verbal interpretation and so on.In addition,effective solutions are proposed to the problems encountered in the process,such as supplement of encyclopedic knowledge,inquiry and confirmation,in an effort to achieve the communicative purpose of the escort interpreting.Therefore,the author completed the interpreting task successfully with the help of the Interpretive Theory and improved her interpreting level.The solutions put forward in this thesis to improving the practical ability of interpreters may provide lessons not only for the future escort interpreting in tourism,but also for other types of interpreting under the guidance of the Interpretive Theory.
