Abstract/Summary:
With the increasing output of the Chinese culture and the rise of its status on the international stage,China’s tourism industry has been developing rapidly. After 40 years of development, inbound tourism has entered a mature stage.Inbound tourists are also more willing to experience deeply the local lifestyle and cultural characteristics of China(Li Weishan,2007: 140-144).As most foreigners can unavoidably encounter cultural barriers, escort interpreting is in great demand to enhance cross-cultural understanding and meanwhile improve inbound tourism services. This practice report was based on the author’s escort interpreting for a pair of Canadians visiting the Wuhou Temple. It describes the whole process of interpreting and then introduces the Interpretive Theory.Marianne Lederer,Founder of the Interpretive Theory holds that expressing the intended meaning is the final goal of interpreting(Lederer,2014: 48).An interpreter should try his or her best to get rid of the verbal symbols of the source language and grasp the meaning and the intention of the speaker. The whole interpreting process, according to this theory, can be divided into three steps: comprehension,de-verbalization and re-expression(Seleskovitch,1978).Under the guidance of this theory, the author illustrates how to use coping strategies such as addition, omission, and paraphrasing to solve the problems frequently encountered in escort interpreting with examples based on the recorded transcription. On this basis, the author puts forward some suggestions. Therefore, experience can be concluded from this interpreting practice, and meanwhile hopefully, this report will provide some inspirations and references for future interpreters,to make contributions to promoting cross-cultural communication and inbound tourism services.
