Since the publication of the first two volumes of Xi Jinping:The Governance of China,it has received widespread attention both at home and abroad.Since the 19 th National Congress of the Communist Party of China(CPC),Xi Jinping has made a series of further important statements in his leadership in promoting the practice of governance in the new era, putting forward many major ideological ideas that are original, contemporary and instructive.Xi Jinping: The Governance of China(Volume III)(Volume III will be used in the following text)consists of 92 important articles, including reports, speeches, talks, instructions and congratulatory letters from Xi Jinping during the period from October 18,2017 to January 13,2020.This set of books has become an important reading material for studying Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era.In this set of books,Xi Jinping quotes scriptures and references, combining traditional Chinese culture with the political ideological ideas for a new era.The accurate translation of Classic Chinese Quotations in political texts is a matter of great importance in allowing the world to understand China properly, and is of strategic importance in the context of great power diplomacy in the new era.Eco-translatology is a theory that examines translation activities from an ecological perspective. It emphasizes the translator’s adaption and selection activities in response to the eco-environment of translation. In the translation process, the translator plays a leading role, conducting adaptive selection from a three-dimensional transformation perspective. In this way,Eco-translatology provides translation research with a new perspective. The purpose of this study is to investigate the following questions:(1)What are political ideas for a new era conveyed by Xi Jinping’s quotations in Volume III?(2)What are strategies employed in the English translation of quotations in Volume III from the perspective of Eco-translatology?(3)What suggestions can be made for translators to apply Eco-translatology in the English translation of quotations? In order to answer these questions, the author analyzes the translation of the quotations in the book by using Eco-translatology as a guide from three dimensions:language, culture and communication. The author analyzes a large number of recent cases in the book, drawing the following conclusions.(1)Xi Jinping not only promotes traditional Chinese culture but also expresses new political ideas by quoting Chinese poems and sayings, which are endowed with the connotation of the times. In this way,Chinese traditional culture has been creatively transformed and developed. It conveys Xi’s political thought of strengthening cultural confidence and building a strong cultural country, thus improving the influence of Chinese culture. This requires translators to attach great importance to cultural translation in political texts.Through translation, translators should tell Chinese stories well, spread Chinese voices and promote Chinese culture to the world.(2)The translation of Volume III maintains the harmony of the translation eco-environment.The author analyses the 27 examples and finds that the translators make adaptation and selection from three dimensions: linguistic dimension, cultural dimension and communicative dimension.Instead of simply sticking to the original text and applying a fixed translation strategy, translators carry out in-depth translation, such as annotation, interpretation and so on,according to translation eco-environments such as readers, times and speakers’ intentions.(3)In the translation process, translators need to think from the perspective of Eco-translatology.Xi’s quotations are all made on different occasions, which implying different meanings and reflecting the vitality of quotations. The author suggests that translators should not only pay attention to the literal meaning of the original text, but also adapt to the specific situation and the speaker’s intention. While retaining the unique charm of traditional Chinese culture, translators should transform it in a living and creative way to express the spirit of the times, which is in line with Eco-translatology.Through theoretical introduction and case studies, the author makes a study on the translation of Xi Jinping’s quotations. In this way,the author spreads new political ideas from the perspective of translation, finds out the places worth learning by analyzing the examples of Volume III,and summarizes the methods of in-depth translation, thus providing suggestions for translators engaged in the translation of quotations. At present, there are few case studies on translation of quotations in Volume III from the perspective of Eco-translatology.This study is of great practical significance for the application of the theory in translation practice. It is hoped that the thesis will shed light on future translations of the quotations in political texts, and it will more effectively convey traditional Chinese culture and China’s political ideas in the new era through the translation of quotations.
