A Study On The English Translation Of Quotations In XI JINPING:the Governance Of China From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

In recent years,as China has become more active on the stage of the international community,the influence in all aspects has also increased day by day.International publicity texts are important ways of conveying Chinese thoughts and voices,which have provided a communicative platform for other countries to understand China.Naturally,the translation involved are placed in a very important position.XI JINPING: the Governance of China is a book which covers ideas and policies of President Xi.It provides a unique view for global communities to understand China’s development,which is significant for China’s external propaganda and Chinese culture going outside.The speaker quoted classics in speeches to express his opinions and spread national culture.These quoted contents are the essence of Chinese culture that can indicate Chinese spirits,thus,how to translate spiritual and cultural heritage carried by these quoted contents to target language readers is of great significance for the spread of Chinese culture and the transmission of Chinese voice.And the analysis of various contents quoted in XI JINPING:the Governance of China can help people from English-speaking countries to have a deep understanding of China’s magnificent culture.Skopos theory originated from German functionalist school and was proposed by Vermeer.Skopos theory is a method of studying translation.It reflects a shift from predominantly linguistic to a more functional and sociocultural oriented study of translation.It follows three rules,namely skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule.Among them,skopos rule is the highest rule.Coherence rule refers that translation must be intralingually coherent,which means that the target text must be sufficiently coherent,given the established background knowledge and context.Fidelity rule means that translation must be interlingually coherent,that is,the coherence between the original text and the target text.This thesis will study two questions.First,how are the three rules of skopos theory embodied in the translation of quotations in XI JINPING: the Governance of China.Second,what translation strategies,methods and techniques are applied in the translation process from the perspective of skopos theory.It has been found that skopos theory has certain guiding value for the translation of quotations.The major findings are as follows:Firstly,skopos theory has been embodied in the quotations of the English version of XI JINPING: the Governance of China from two levels.They are cultural level and language level.From the cultural level,it shows that the aims of the rendering is to convey Chinese political ideas and Chinese traditional and outstanding culture for target language readers.Skopos theory has achieved these aims by its three rules.The radical goal of this text is to realize cultural exchanges between China and other nations.Following this highest guidance,it is found that when showing cultural characteristics in the rendering,translators should consider preserving Chinese specific contents.Under this situation,the fidelity rule should be given priority.And when communication is put into the first consideration,translators should primarily take the coherence rule into account to make the rendering meaningful in the communication.From language level,translators should make the rendering understandable and acceptable for target language readers.Thus,context,manifestation of logical relations and integration of some concepts should be considered.Secondly,under the guidance of skopos theory,it is found that the translation of poetry and allusions mainly use domestication strategy and take foreignization strategy as a complement strategy,while the translation of the sentences of classical works mainly use domestication strategy.Translators have used free translation,literal translation and imitation in the translation of poetry.Free translation is adopted in the translation of the sentences of classical works and free translation and literal translation are used in the translation of allusions.To realize these translation methods,addition,omission and combination are adopted in the translation of poetry.Addition and combination are used in the translation of the sentences of classical works,and addition and omission are applied in the translation of allusions.This thesis discusses the quotation translation in XI JINPING: The Governance of China from the perspective of skopos theory.It demonstrates the feasibility of skopos theory in explaining translators’ behavior.To a certain extent,it enriches the research on the translation of XI JINPING: The Governance of China and provides some references for the rendering of such texts to achieve better translation effects.
