| Xi Jinping:The Governance of China,Volume Ⅳ and its English translation were published on July 2,2022,which is the latest volume of this series of books,including 109 written and spoken works made by General Secretary Xi Jinping from February 3,2020 to May 10,2022.This series of books and their multilingual translations have become important materials for people at home and abroad to understand China’s political system and the Communist Party of China’s ruling philosophy.In this study,the author adopted Conceptual Metaphor Theory proposed by Lakoff and Johnson,Metaphor Identification Procedure developed by Pragglejaz Group,the calculation method of resonance of source domain put forward by Charteris-Black and strategies for translating conceptual metaphors’ metaphorical expressions summarized by Sheng Dandan as the theoretical framework to conduct a study on the conceptual metaphors in the fourth volume of The Governance of China and their corresponding English translation.Twelve categories were identified,among which journey metaphor,human metaphor,building and construction metaphor and war metaphor were major types having higher resonances of source domain.Based on Sheng Dandan’s classification,metaphorical equivalence was the most frequently used translation strategy for conceptual metaphors.In addition,demetaphorization were also used frequently by official translators,while re-metaphorization and metaphorization had relatively lower frequency of use.Therefore,when translating conceptual metaphors in the fourth volume,translators tended to retain the conceptual metaphors of the original text to achieve translation equivalence.In regards to the factors that could influence translators’ choice of translation strategies,the author identified three main factors:cultural factors,linguistic factors,and the translators’subjective factors. |
