| The English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2022)clearly stipulates that teachers should adhere to the principle of educating students foremost, fully respect each one,and let each have a positive learning experience in the process of teaching English in junior high school. Moreover, teachers should not only pay attention to what to learn, but also focus on why to learn and how to learn. In fact,in the process of English reading teaching, the traditional class teaching system occupies the main position. Not considering the individual differences of students, teachers design teaching goals based on the level of middle students. It seems to be equal, but in fact it restricts the development of students with good foundation, hurts the self-confidence of students with poor foundation and thus causes polarization eventually. If teachers set the same teaching goals for students of different levels of reading ability, students’ English learning motivation will be seriously affected. As the most important way to improve the language input and ability of English learning,English reading plays a crucial role in English learning. But problems such as polarization, lack of self-construction ability, insufficient classroom vitality of students and low efficiency of reading teaching are still serious in English reading teaching in junior high school. Therefore, the author applies the stratified teaching method to English reading teaching,in order to change the current status of reading teaching. The stratified teaching is a teaching model for the whole students. It emphasizes that teachers’ teaching should be adapted to students’ learning and should be tailored to their aptitudes. In this sense,it cultivates the development of level A students, makes progress for level B students and lets level C students not fall behind, and then achieves the overall optimization of the whole class. The core of stratified teaching is to divide teaching into different levels and to determine different goals according to students’ existing knowledge and ability levels. And the purpose of stratified teaching is to help students accurately position themselves,so that they can develop, gain the joy of success in each lesson and gradually change their mind from passive learning to active learning. Finally, they can achieve the goal of lifelong learning. This research is supported by Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development Theory and Bloom’s Mastery Learning Theory. The participants involved in the study were Class 2 Grade 8 and Class 4 Grade 8 in junior high school in Hubei province. Each class had 55 students with similar proportion of gender. On the one hand,Class2 was regarded as the control class(CC)in which the traditional reading teaching was adopted. On the other hand,Class 4 was the experimental class(EC)and stratified mode in reading teaching was applied in the class. And this research mainly studied the following two questions: 1)How to enhance students’ interest in English reading by using stratified teaching? 2)How to improve students’ English reading ability by applying stratified teaching? By using test, questionnaire and interview, teaching objectives, classroom questions, homework and teaching evaluation, the author conducted a three-month stratified teaching experiment in the experiment class from the aspects of students. Before and after the experiment,a survey was conducted by questionnaire and test for the class. With the statistical software SPSSPRO.,the independent sample T test and means analysis were mainly used for statistical analysis of data. The experimental results showed that compared with the traditional teaching, the stratified teaching mode enhances students’ interest in English reading, improves the effect of students’ learning English and promotes the improvement of students’ reading ability. And the stratified teaching experiment has the greatest effect on students at level C,followed by level B,and finally level A,which shows that English reading teaching is feasible. To sum up,this study confirms the validity of stratified teaching in English reading teaching in junior high school, which provides reference examples for English teachers in junior high school in the future. |
