| In some rural areas,many students have subdued enthusiasm and hold negative attitude towards English reading,struggling with reading English texts.As the reform of compulsory education progresses,the traditional teaching method can no longer meet students’ needs in improving the English reading literacy in rural junior high schools.An immediate and effective solution is needed in regard to how to improve their English reading literacy.The primary goal of this paper is to determine the validity to improve the English literacy of junior high school students in the rural areas with the application of the stratified teaching method.There are two questions to be addressed.(1)What are the effects of stratified teaching approach on the reading ability of rural junior high school students?(2)What are the changes of students’ attitude in English reading with the application of stratified teaching approach?The subjects of the 14-week experiment are two parallel class students in the eighth grade of a rural junior high school in Henan province.The first class is the control class where the traditional method is applied in the English reading teaching.The second class is the experimental class where stratified teaching method is adopted instead.The research instruments are primarily composed of questionnaires,interviews and tests.Questionnaires are conducted to the students before and after the experiment in order to analyze the changes in their reading attitude and reading purpose.In addition,the students’ English reading ability is tested before and after the experiment,namely pre-test and post-test,whose purpose is to detect whether the students’ reading ability has changed.Interview with students after the experiment aims to further detect changes in students’ reading attitudes.The data results are analyzed by SPSS.21.0software.The research results suggest that the application of stratified teaching method can effectively improve the reading literacy of rural junior high school students,which is mainly manifested enabling better students’ reading ability and reading attitude.First of all,the reading ability of the students in the experimental class has been improved to varying degrees,especially in terms of language knowledge and reading methods.Secondly,the stratified teaching method is conducive to improving the English reading attitude of students at different levels,especially for mid-achieving and potential-achieving students.In addition,students have greatly changed their reading objectives,gained higher reading speed,improved reading ability and post-reading behavior.Therefore,the stratified teaching method is worthy of attempts by front-line teachers in teaching reform for better reading literacy of junior high school students in rural areas. |
