On Strategies For Translating Chinese Culture-Loaded Words From The Perspective Of Chesterman’s Translation Ethics Models

Tourism,closely connected with culture,is a paramount means of introducing China culture to the wider world.Considering the enormous differences between Chinese and Western history,languages,societies,and geography,translating culture-loaded words in tourism texts has always been a challenge.From the perspective of the five ethics models proposed by Andrew Chesterman,the present report aims to investigate the translation strategies of culture-loaded vocabulary from Chinese to English by analyzing instances cited from the second,third,and fifth chapters of Travelling Across China:Chengdu.Having studied previous theoretical and practical research into translation ethics,Andrew Chesterman put forward the five models of representation,service,communication,norms,and commitment in his Proposal for a Hieronymic Oath,which exert profound influence in academia.Taking such models as guidance,the present report aims to investigate what are possible methods for translating culture-loaded vocabulary,how to determine which should be applied for the sake of quality translation,and whether Chesterman’s framework works in the processes of while-translation and post-translation.The present report adopts the methodology of case analysis.The reason why the author seeks help from such a methodology is that the research is designed to address descriptive and explanatory questions and to offer more profound analysis and first-hand experience as to translating culture-loaded vocabulary from Chinese to English,fitting the demonstration by Robert Yin in his Case Study Research:Design and Methods.With in-depth analysis of representative cases in the chosen book,the author concludes the following points.In the first place,the five possible options,namely,transliteration with literal translation,transliteration with annotations,literal translation with annotations,literal translation,and free translation,are available for translating culture-loaded vocabulary.Then,translation purposes determine translation methods.Last but not least,Chesterman’s translation ethics models can offer help in the processes of while-translation and post-translation...
