| Chesterman, one of the scholars in early research on translation ethics, summarized five models of translation ethics based on the studies of previous researchers. To date, there is much translation research on literary works, scientific texts, and commercial texts in light of Chesterman’s ethical models, yet there is very limited interpretation research from this perspective. With this in view, this thesis explores the C-E interpretation of culture-loaded expressions at the Premier’s press conferences(2014-2022)based on three of Chesterman’s five ethical models, namely, ethics of representation, ethics of communication, and norm-based ethics. It focuses on the following research questions:1.How frequently is each ethical model observed?2.How has the observance of each ethical model changed over the 9 years?3.What corresponding interpretation strategies are adopted in line with each model? How frequently is each strategy employed? How has the employment of each strategy changed over the 9 years? These questions are addressed through the following methods:qualitative analysis, quantitative analysis, comparative and contrastive analysis, case study. To start with, all the interpreting cases of typical CLEs were sorted out of the corpus. Then the total numbers and percentages of the cases observing each model were calculated. The data demonstrates that the interpreter tends to observe ethics of communication most, and then norm-based ethics;the interpreter’s ethical choices differ much over the 9 years. The observance proportion of the ethics of representation rose year by year from 2014 to 2016,fluctuated from 2017 to 2019,and suddenly climbed up from 2020 to 2022.The observance proportion of ethics of communication,in contrast, runs counter to that of ethics of representation during these three periods. The observance of norm-based ethics remains relatively stable during the 9 years.Furthermore, the thesis explores the interpretation strategies adopted by the interpreter in observing each model and their employment. It finds the following strategies:faithful literal interpretation, approximate literal interpretation, literal interpretation plus clarification, reduction, clarification, etc. Then the total numbers and percentages of the cases employing each strategy were calculated. The data shows that the most frequently employed strategy is[clarification]and then[literal interpretation plus clarification],which reveals that at political conferences, effective dissemination and reception of the ST is the pressing task;meanwhile the interpreter is skillful in integrating the ST culture into the TT.Theoretically, this study examines the applicability of a trimmed and optimized ethical framework based on Chesterman’s models to research on political conference interpreting.Practically, this study finds some tendency concerning the ethical choices and strategy employment of a distinguished institutional interpreter when interpreting CLEs at political conferences,so as to provide a reference for the foreign publicity of institutional interpreters. |
