This article is a translation practice report based on texts taken from Chapters 1 and 2 of The Young Autistic Adult’s Independence Handbook by Hayley Moss.Using personal stories,expert interviews,and advice from other young adults,this book studies how young adults with autism can begin their journey of self-discovery and independence,and learn to survive in the “real adult world”.The first Chapter elaborates on the importance of autistic people to understand themselves correctly and explains the meaning of “independence” to them.The second Chapter focuses on the mental health problems of autistic adults,calling on them to relieve anxiety and stress by learning “self-care”.The translator chooses Chapter 1-2 as the source language of the translation practice text,with aiming to help people re-understand autism,understand a more positive image of autistic adults,and improve the public’s attention to young autistics.In the process of translation,the differences between different languages and cultures often affect translators to some extent.In order to accurately translate a language with cultural characteristics into another language and achieve semantic and functional equivalence,it is necessary to carry out some level and category shifts in translation.Catford’s translation shifts theory provides new perspectives for the translator to deal with the differences between the Chinese and English languages at the lexical and syntactic levels,making the translation more in line with the expression habits of the target language.Under the guidance of Catford’s translation shifts theory,the translator fully considers the cultural differences between Chinese and English and analyzes the application of shifts theory in specific translation practices from the lexical and sentence levels through specific cases,so that the translation can convey the original content accurately and conform to the expression habits of the target language.Through this translation practice,the translator finds that Catford’s translation shifts theory provides translators with translation guidance from different perspectives and has strong applicability to the source text.
