Translation of folktales is of great significance for ethnic cultures. The source text of this translation assignment is extracted from The Collection of Folktales of Li.This thesis is to explore its translation difficulties and solutions. In the translation process, based on Li Changshuan’s general translation guidelines that "translating as if you were writing" and "critical thinking" and under the framework of "comprehension, expression, and adaptation(CEA)",translation difficulties are identified and solutions are analyzed.“Comprehension" suggests understanding in line with context, background information, and language details."Expression" requires obligatory sentence restructure to ensure coherence."Adaption" contains two text adjustments:abandoning the original form of the source text and flexible omission. There are abundant proper nouns,culture-laden vocabulary, and Classical Chinese sentences in the source texts. In translation, the translator found that:1)Paraphrases are widely used in this report to address some comprehension issues in the source text.2)Appropriate sentence restructuring is made to fit in with the logic of the target language.3)Abandoning the form of the original language and making flexible omissions are to cope with difficult words and expressions in the source text for better translation quality.Li’s CEA analysis framework is applied in translation, acting as a reference for future research. The translator adopted several translation strategies to overcome the challenges of translating Chinese folktales into English, which can contribute to the translation practice of folk literature to a certain degree.
