Grammar is the heart of language,and grammar teaching is an indispensable part of language teaching.With the continuous reform of the high school English curriculum in China,the Ministry of Education issued the Regular High School English Curriculum Standards in 2020(2017 Edition 2020 Revision).Teaching objectives and teaching contents are further defined,and specific suggestions are put forward for teaching and evaluation.Based on the Three-Dimensional Grammar Framework,this study aimed to explore the current situation of English grammar teaching in regular senior high schools and attempt to find answers for the following two questions:(1)What is the current situation of English grammar teaching in high schools?(2)What factors influence English grammar teaching in high schools? Three hundred high school second year students and 30 high school second year English teachers were recruited from three schools in Yichun,Jiangxi.Questionnaires and qualitative interview were adopted to conduct the investigation.Based on the data collected in this study,some major findings could be summarized.First,most teachers attached importance to grammar teaching,and they understood the close relationship between grammar and discourse in English.Secondly,teachers could acquire rich grammar learning resources from multiple channels and learning platforms.In addition,teachers could integrate ideological and moral education into grammar teaching,which echoes the concept of fostering virtue through education.Other problems were also found: the insufficient attention to the value of the three-dimensional dynamic grammar framework,insufficient and disorganized grammar teaching resources,and insufficient interesting grammar teaching activities.Further,students had great difficulty in applying grammar into oral communication and writing.Given the findings,recommendations were provided to improve the current grammar teaching in high schools.Firstly,teachers should learn the concepts of the New Curriculum Standards and identify the teaching objectives and content requirements of grammar teaching.Secondly,teachers should utilize various forms of grammar teaching resources to establish grammar teaching resource network.Meanwhile,teachers should design hierarchical,relevant and practical grammar activities to stimulate students’ learning interest and improve their autonomous learning ability.Finally,a positive and protective grammar teaching environment should be created to foster positive teaching and learning outcomes. |
