The status of grammar in English language learning has always been the focus of research in English language teaching.The new curriculum standards clearly put forward the concept of the activity-based approach to English learning and the three-dimensional dynamic grammatical view.The three-dimensional dynamic grammatical view of "form-meaning-use",which is oriented to language use is the view of grammar teaching advocated by the current new curriculum standards;the view of activity-based approach to English learning requires teachers to design English learning activities that are contextual,hierarchical and effective.In this context,a full understanding of the current situation of English grammar teaching can help teachers to improve themselves on the basis of their original teaching.With 31 Junior Middle School English teachers as the participants,this thesis is based on a combination of quantitative and qualitative analysis by using questionnaires,classroom observations and text analysis to do the investigation.Research questions are as follows:(1)What attitudes do teachers have toward teaching grammar?(2)What are the characteristics of teachers’ activities in the process of teaching grammar?(3)What is the proportion of “form”,“meaning” and“use” in teachers’ grammar teaching?The findings of this study are as follows:(1)Teachers hold a positive attitude towards teaching grammar.In terms of grammar,teachers believe that grammar is not very difficult to learn and grammatical accuracy plays an important role in listening,speaking,reading and writing.In terms of students’ grammar learning,teachers felt that students have a positive attitude towards learning grammar,but there are still problems with its use in practice and grammar learning needs to be strengthened.Some teachers are not entirely sure whether students have an effective way of learning and whether they have learned grammar effectively.In grammar teaching,teachers focus on the form,meaning,and use of grammar.(2)Using English Disciplinary Competency Framework as a reference,the teaching activities in grammar teaching are focused on comprehension activities and application activities,with a few innovation activities.(3)In grammar teaching,teachers take “form-meaning-use” into account and more emphasis on use.This is in line with the new curriculum standards’ three-dimensional dynamic view of grammar.Based on the above findings,this study makes the following recommendations for grammar teaching:(1)In the process of teaching grammar,teachers should improve the evaluation mechanism for students’ grammar learning;(2)Teachers should focus on the use-oriented three-dimensional dynamic grammatical view of "form-meaning-use" in grammar teaching;(3)grammar knowledge does not exist independently,and teaching activities should be integrated with listening,speaking,reading and writing.
