The Interpreting Tactics Of High-density Information Text

This interpreting practice report reviews and reflects the simulated E-C interpreting practice of the third seminar of the series organized by the Official Monetary and Financial Institutions Forum(OMFIF).The title of the seminar is The Impact of Digital Currencies on the Financial System.The main topic of this seminar is related to a cutting-edge field,digital currency.The content of the seminar is highly specialized,and the interpreting text has high information density.The report takes this simulated interpreting practice as an example to reflect on and summarize the feasible tactics of conducting the interpreting practice with highdensity information text.The material of this interpreting practice is a high-density information text whose main causes are the high degree of formality of the selected text,high specialization of the topic,the prepared speech,and the high rate of delivery of the source speech.These factors increase text information density,which becomes a major challenge for the interpreter.The challenges are mainly manifested in coordinate construction,embedded structure,and unclear logical cohesion.High information density results in elevated pressure on the interpreter in terms of listening,short-term memory,and production.Such characteristics of the selected interpreting text probably cause poor performance of the interpreter,such as information omission and misinterpreting if there is an imbalance in energy allocation.Therefore,under the guidance of Daniel Gile’s Effort Model of Interpreting,the interpreter adopts various tactics to avoid these technical errors.The interpreter adopted interpreting tactics such as omission and anticipation for the parallel structure,used the tactics of segmentation and word conversion for embedded structure,and employed the tactics of lengthening the Ear-Voice Span(EVS)and omission for unclear logical cohesion.By analyzing this simulated interpreting practice,the interpreter puts forward plausible interpreting tactics for high-density information text,providing some reference to some interpreters to conduct interpretation of similar types of information texts.
