The Research on Improving Systems of Education(RISE)Programme is a global research endeavour that seeks to understand how education systems in developing countries can overcome the learning crisis.This report is about a simulated English-Chinese simultaneous interpreting practice,based on the lunchtime panel session hosted by RISE teams On June 20,2019.The topic of this panel session is“Big Efforts in Education”.Guided by Gile’s Effort Model,the report analyzes major challenges and corresponding coping tactics in this practice.During the interpreting,the interpreter encountered four kinds of challenges,namely difficulties in comprehension(such as unknown words and unspecific references),high-density information,loose logic structure and redundancy.Accordingly,coping tactics were adopted including inferencing,paraphrasing,syntactic transformation,summarizing,explicitation of logic relations,conversion of parts of speech,omission and compression,to allocate the interpreter’s efforts appropriately and to make the target language more in line with Chinese expression habits.After the interpreting,the interpreter conducted a quality evaluation and then found existing problems,including halting speech,loss of information and expression redundancy.To tackle above problems,the sight interpreting and listening practice should be strengthened,which can help the interpreter express more concisely and react faster in the future interpreting practice.Hopefully,this report could provide experience for simultaneous interpreting learners and also provide aid for relevant education research. |
