Abstract/Summary:
This report draws on the simulated C-E simultaneous interpreting(SI)of the“2021World New Energy Vehicle Congress Hainan Special Session”held in Haikou City,Hainan Province on September 17th,2021.The author writes this report based on the major difficulties encountered in the interpretation practice and on their coping tactics of them.During this session, the speakers demonstrate the cutting-edge technologies and the characteristics of modern new energy vehicles(NEVs),by using a large number of jargon and figures.Enumerations and numbers belong to representative dense information because of their low redundancy and heavy information load. And syntactic differences between Chinese and English cause the different locations of attributes in sentences. The central word in Chinese appears at the end of the sentence. If the modifier is too long, with a lot of information, there is a high lexical density in a sentence. And if the interpreter doesn’t interpret it until hearing the central word,it will intensify her memory burden, thus resulting in difficulties in correct and good-quality interpreting. In this report, the author categorizes the dense information in the source-language text into three types:(1)high-density information caused by enumerations;(2)high-density information caused by numbers;(3)high-density information in sentences with long modifiers.Daniel Gile puts forth The Effort Model, which divides SI into four parts, namely listening,production,short-term memory, and coordination. The process of SI can only go smoothly when total processing capacity requirements do not exceed the interpreter’s total available processing capacity, and when the efforts can be dispatched properly in each part.According to his Effort Model, the corresponding coping tactics are as follows:(1)simplification and generalization for dense information caused by enumerations;(2)approximation and note-taking for dense information caused by numbers;(3)reorganization and anticipation for dense information in sentences with long attributes. With the Model, the report examines the difficulties caused by high-density information and proposes corresponding coping tactics, which may provide some reference for the interpreters to conduct interpretation practices and studies when encountering similar problems in this field.
