This report is based on an English-Chinese consecutive interpreting practice by the author. It focuses on coping tactics to reduce information loss and improve integrity and coherence of the target speech. In this report, information loss was found in the target speech, which affects integrity, coherence and acceptability of the source speech and further hampers the overall quality of interpretation. Therefore, interpreters should try to avoid information loss in interpreting. In this report, the author categorizes information loss into three types, including information loss at lexical level, information loss at syntactic level and information loss at logic level.Guided by Gile’s Effort Model, the author found that information loss resulted from insufficient linguistic knowledge, imbalance between note-taking and short-term memory and ineffective notes. To address information loss problems, the author adopts three coping tactics, including reformulation, generalization and optimizing note-taking,thereby reducing information loss and producing integrate, coherent and logical interpretation.
