Under the guidance of the Skopos Theory, the report explores feasible and effective strategies in coping with difficulties arising in the simulated Chinese-English consecutive interpreting regarding the lecture entitled Qu Yuan:Anxiety on Time.It was given by Huang Xiaodan,an associate professor from Jiangnan University,on the platform in 2020.Qu Yuan:Anxiety on Time,an academic lecture, mainly focusing on Qu Yuan and his Li Sao,is characterized by the full involvement of historical, cultural and literary knowledge,idioms,poems,culture-loaded words, and quotations. It is significant to transmit this lecture with rich Chinese cultural connotations to foreign audience through consecutive interpreting as this simulated task can promote intercultural communication..The rich contents of this academic lecture Qu Yuan:Anxiety on Time mentioned above pose great challenges to the interpreter, which can be categorized into four types, including idioms,topic-prominent sentences, implicit information and semantic redundancy. The Skopos Theory is the theoretical framework informing this interpreting practice.Under the guidance of its three basic tenets, which are the skopos rule, the coherence rule and the fidelity rule, four corresponding interpreting strategies are come up with to address the four difficulties arising in the simulated consecutive interpreting. They are paraphrasing, structure shift and unit shift, explicitation and omission.Paraphrasing can convey precise meanings of idioms to foreign audience;structure shift and unit shift are effective to establish logical sentence structures and produce renditions conforming to expressions habits of foreign audiences;explicitation can reveal implicit information within sentences and omission is to delete redundant parts to make renditions more concise and understandable.Specific application of the four strategies to the simulated consecutive interpreting is carefully explored and illustrated with abundant examples. As a conclusion,it is demonstrated that these strategies enable the interpreter to achieve expected communicative purpose, faithfully express meanings and intentions and pay attention to coherence within the interpreted version.
