A Report On Chinese-English Translation Of China’s Rural Development Report 2022(Excerpts) From The Perspective Of Relevance Translation Theory

The construction of China’s international discourse system and its relevant research become more and more comprehensive and multi-disciplinary,which can be seen from the increasing studies on the language features and translation of various reports.China’s Rural Development Report 2022 aims to cater readers’ need towards understanding the current situation,policies and plans of China’s rural development.Focusing on the construction of an all-round China’s international discourse system,the author holds that it is an essential part to carry out Chinese-English translation activities themed on agriculture and rural areas.Relevance translation theory suggests that translation is an “Ostensive-inferential”communication from author to translator to reader.After considering the cognitive context and language features of the target reader,the translator passes the information from the original text to the target text reader.Guided by the theory,this paper selects the main chapter of the Report as research objects,and studies the translation process of agricultural reports with Chinese characteristics through case analysis.It is found that: 1.)Information accuracy can be achieved at lexical level by referring to professional dictionaries and corpus,such as the translation of terminologies and abbreviations.Some terms can only be determined in specific context.2.)For contextual consistency,the cognitive context of target language readers can be improved through avoiding redundancy and information compensation at syntactic level.3.)To achieve optimal relevance,the shift in cohesion and coherence at textual level are quite necessary.The result shows that Relevance Translation Theory is helpful when translating such kind of texts,which will cost less efforts of target language readers,make the target text obtain better contextual effect,achieving better relevance.Based on the Relevance Translation Theory,this paper analyzes difficulties in the translation of agricultural report texts with Chinese characteristics and providing solutions accordingly,which has certain value for future studies in this field,and also provides references for the international communication in agriculture of China.
