A Report On The E-C Translation Of World Economic Outlook 2022(Excerpts) From The Perspective Of Newmark’s Text Typology Theory

Based on Karl Bühler’s theory of the division of language functions,Newmark proposes the three most important functions of language,namely the expressive function,informative function and vocative function.He also points out that different text types should adopt corresponding translation methods,namely semantic translation and communicative translation.This theory offers theoretical guidance for the Chinese translation of the fourth Part of the World Economic Outlook,and provides translation strategies and methods to solve the grammatical,syntactic and cultural problems encountered in the translation process so that the translation conforms to the expression of the target language and thus to the language habits of the target readers.This translation practice report is based on the completion of this task and reviews and analyzes how Newmark’s text typology theory is fully implemented in this task.This report is excerpted from the World Economic Outlook(WEO),an authoritative global economic information officially released by the International Monetary Fund(IMF)in April 2022.In the process of translation of the fourth part of the World Economic Outlook,the translation difficulties caused by grammatical and syntactic factors encountered in the translation process are sorted out,so the report focuses on how to apply Newmark’s text typology theory to solve the difficulties,summarize the communicative translation strategies and translation methods of conversion,omission and inversion specifically used for the characteristics of informative texts in translation,and discusses how the translator quickly and effectively complete the Chinese translation of informative texts whose source language is English at the semantic and communicative levels.Through this English-Chinese translation practice,the translator has learned the linguistic characteristics,translation strategies and methods of informative texts,and gained a deeper understanding of the translation considerations of this type of text,which will provide some guidance for future English-Chinese translation practice of the same type of text,and also provide the reference for translators engaged in translation work in related fields.This report first analyzes the content and linguistic characteristics of the source text and clarifies the purpose and significance of the report.Secondly,on the basis of the current report of Newmark’s text typology theory at home and abroad,this report lists the research on the combination of Newmark’s text typology theory and economic text.Then a systematic overview of Newmark’s text typology theory is given,and the theoretical framework of this report is built on this basis.After that,more systematic case analysis is conducted for the linguistic characteristics of the economic text,combined with Newmark’s text typology theory.Finally,the whole text is summarized,and the implications of this report for the translation practice of economic texts are presented,and the experiences and lessons of the translation process are summarized.
