A Report On The E-C Translation Of China’s Resources,Energy And Sustainable Development:2020 (Excerpt) From The Perspective Of Newmark’s Communicative Translation Theory

The source text of the translation practice is excerpted from the third chapter of the book China‘s Resource,Energy and Sustainable Development: 2020,co-authored by Ma Linwei,Lu Zongxiang,and other scholars.The text is sci-tech as well as informative in nature,which emphasizes the logic and accuracy of the text.That means the information of the source text needs to be transmitted to readers completely and accurately.To this end,the source language should be concise and understandable,through which the information and facts of the source text can be delivered.Newmark‘s communicative translation theory is centered on the target language and readers.It emphasizes both readers‘ understanding of the source text and attempts to generate on its target readers an effect as close as possible to that gained on the original readers.In the translation process,the theory allows translators to rearrange the sentence structure of the source text to make the translated text clearer,smoother and more understandable.Based on this,the theory is suitable for analyzing the translation of the source text.Therefore,the translator analyzes the problems in translation and translation methods and techniques adopted at lexical,syntactic,and textual levels based on Newmark‘s communicative translation theory and the linguistic features of the source text.At the lexical level,given the huge differences between the source and target languages in linguistic structure and expressive habits,the translator employs extension,amplification and conversion to translate words accurately according to the specific context.At the syntactic level,the translator‘s attention is paid to the translation of the passive voice,nominal structures,and long and complicated sentences because they are widely used in the source text.And the translated text can be consistent with the expressive habits of the target language with the help of amplification,voice conversion and restructuring,etc.At the textual level,discourse coherence of the translated text is ensured through grammatical cohesion.With combination,amplification and omission,the translated text becomes smoother and more fluent and understandable to the target readers,and its logical relationship is also more explicit.In this way,the communicative function of the text can be achieved.The translator hopes that this translation report can provide some references for translators who strive to promote the translation of environmental technical texts.
