A Report On The Chinese-English Translation Of China’s Rural Tourism In The New Era(Chapter 10) Under The Guidance Of Translation Norms Theory

The new era has witnessed achievements in rural revitalization in China.Telling the story of rural revitalization in English is very important for sharing China’s experience and enhancing the national pride of Chinese people.With China’s Rural Tourism in the New Era as the source text and Toury’s translation norms as the theoretical guidance,this translation project tries to share China’s valuable experience of transforming and upgrading rural areas by developing tourism and industry.The translator is responsible for translating Chapter 10 “Development and Upgrading of Beautiful Villages”,which contains many terminologies,proper nouns and long and difficult sentences.The source text expounds the construction models and the development of industry and tourism in beautiful villages from the perspective of rural revitalization.Since the source text is largely informative,the translator should make the target text convey the information of the source text accurately and make it conform to the norms of the target language so as to improve acceptability and readability.The translation project is guided by translation norms theory which includes preliminary norms,initial norms and operational norms.Among these norms,preliminary norms influence the selection of the source text;initial norms require that the translator make an overall choice between adequacy and acceptability;operational norms guide the translator to adopt specific methods to translate the source text.Under the guidance of translation norms,the translator compromises between adequacy and acceptability,and adopts methods such as addition,omission,conversion and reconstructing to deal with problems when translating.By doing the translation project,the translator finds that translation norms can be applied in translating texts like China’s Rural Tourism in the New Era.Meanwhile,through telling the story of China’s rural revitalization in English,the translator gains useful experience to a certain degree and she hopes the project could be an inspiration to English translation of similar texts.
