A Report On The Translation Of Tapestry 2021 Annual Report (Excerpts)

The thesis is a Chinese-English translation of an annual report of nearly 35,000 words selected from Tapestry 2021 Annual Report.With the globalization of the economy,the annual reports of multinational companies are one of the most essential sources for domestic investors and associated companies to get access to the financial performances and business strategies of international companies.Therefore,the thesis selects excerpts from Tapestry 2021 Annual Report,including the company’s business matters,risks,financial status and operational results.The analysis,guided by Newmark’s communicative translation first analyzes the textual features of the annual report from lexical,syntactic and discourse levels and then summarizes the translation process in terms of comprehension and representation.Given that the source text is a corporate annual report,the language of the translation should be objective and authentic,presenting Tapestry’s business development in 2021 while promoting its brand image and core values to the target language readers.Based on the requirements of the type of text,the report analyzes the importance of and difficulties in the translation in achieving accuracy,smoothness and readability in the translation of the annual report.To begin with,accuracy is the most essential requirement in the translation of an annual report.Attaching great importance to terminologies,polysemous words and the translation of charts and figures,the translator adopts the solutions of literal translation,zero translation and contextual meaning.Secondly,smoothness is the soul of an annual report translation.The translator uses the solutions of division,reconstruction and omission to reorganize the long and complex sentences and coordination structure so that their inner logic could be manifested in the translation,making it in line with the target language’s expression habits.Lastly,as a type of business text,an annual report should feature a high level of readability.In the translation,the translator adopts a number of four-character structures and courtesy expressions to make the language more vivid and expressive,which allows the readers to comprehend the translated text more easily.The translator provides solutions to each of these difficulties through the analysis with numerous translation examples.Communicative translation is applied with a focus on the reader,so that readers in the target culture could understand the annual report as well as the source language reader.Through the analysis of the translation,the translator thinks Newmark’s communicative translation could effectively be applied in the translation of annual reports.It is hoped that the examples listed in this thesis could provide some reference for the translation of similar texts.
