This English to Chinese translation practice selects 2009 Annual report pursuant to section 13 and 15(d)published on the General Motor Company's official website as its source text.On June 1,2009 General Motor Corporation—the used-to-be motor giant filed voluntary petitions for relief under Chapter 11 of the U.S.Bankruptcy Code in the U.S.Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York.General Motor Company was then formed with the core operations of the General Motor Corporation and assumed certain liabilities of the old GM as well.Motors Liquidation Company continues to exist as a distinct legal entity with the one and only purpose of liquidating its remaining assets and liabilities.Communicative translation is the guiding theory of this translation practice. This theory supports that the rendition should produce on its readers an effect as close as possible to that obtained on the readers of the original. This report will explore how the “close effect” can be achieved at both lexical and syntactical level. The report falls into four parts: Part One describes the background and significance of the translation practice;Part two illustrates how the task was scheduled and finished and what CAT tools were used during the process.Part three analyzes how the “close effect” were achieved on both lexical and syntactical levels through case studies;Part four draws conclusion to the report, listing major findings, implications and limitations of this report.
