Based on the English-Chinese translation practice of Chapter III of the book Vocabulary and the Four Skills, this report selects the Text Typology Theory of Katharina Reiss,a German functionalist scholar,as the theoretical support for translation practice,to explore the translation methods of academic texts.According to the different functions of the language,Katharine Reiss classifies the texts into three categories: informative texts, expressive texts, and vocative texts. She also puts forward the view that translation strategies should be selected on the basis of text types, text functions, and language characteristics. The book Vocabulary and the Four Skills is an edited volume of academic papers on applied linguistics, which covers the recent research on vocabulary knowledge and reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. The academic text is concise in language, accurate in lexis, coherent in discourse, and clear in logic, which belongs to an informative text. Therefore, the translator should convey the information of the source text objectively and accurately, taking into account the expression habits of the target language,so as to help the target language readers accurately understand the original text.In this translation practice, the translator finds that the source text contains a large number of terms, proper nouns, long and complex sentences, and passive voice sentences.Guided by Reiss’ s Text Typology Theory, the translator analyses the examples from the perspectives of lexis, syntax, and discourse, and discusses the corresponding translation methods. At the lexical level, this report discusses the translation methods of literal translation, amplification, and the conversion of parts of speech in the process of translation. At the syntactic level, the translator explores the translation methods of voice conversion of passive sentences and the translation techniques of reconstructing the sentence structure of complicated sentences. At the discourse level, the translator mainly discusses the translation methods of pronouns and the use of conjunctions in order to achieve cohesion in the context. It has been proved that Reiss’ s Text Typology Theory can guide the translation of academic texts, which are informative texts.Translators can accurately convey the original information in the process of translation, and the readability of the translation is improved under the guidance of Text Typology Theory. |
