The translation material of this report is extracted from Chapter ? of the book An Intercultural Approach to English Language Teaching.Based on Peter Newmark's text typology and linguistic features of the original text, this report discusses the specific translation methods adopted in translation of academic texts with informative function.Based on language function,Peter Newmark divides all forms of texts into three text types, namely, expressive, informative and vocative. The core of expressive text is the author's thought, and the "expressive" elements should be highlighted during translation. The core of informative text is "truth",translation of informative texts should focus on readers' comprehension and response, namely, effect of information transmission. The core of vocative texts is readership, readers' reaction should be emphasized. On the basis of the above three types of texts,he proposes two translation methods:semantic translation and communicative translation.Newmark also makes it clear that semantic translation is adopted for the translation of expressive texts and communicative translation is adopted for informative and vocative texts.According to Newmark's text typology, the author analyzed the linguistic features of the original text, and affirmed that the chosen material belongs to informative texts. Therefore, communicative translation is adopted as the main translation method. There are two objectives to achieve through communicative translation:faithful and clear transmission of information, and inference and rendering of communicative meaning.Based on the two objectives, the author sorted out and classified the problems found in translation, which includes translation of terminology, polysemy, general words and linguistic units need inferences and rendering of communicative meaning.Guided by communicative translation, the author properly adopts free translation, literal translation and other methods for different cases in order to achieve accurate transmission of information, and attempts to produce on its readers an effect as close as possible to that obtained on the original readers. This report is expected to provide reference for the translation of academic texts, especially translation of teaching text books.
