| Based on the translation practice of the first chapter of Where Economics Went Wrong: Chicago’s Abandonment of Classical Liberalism,the author of this thesis analyzed language features of the translation material and explored some translation methods on academic texts under the guidance of Peter Newmark’s text typology theory.Newmark divides texts into three types: the expressive,the informative and the vocative.Different types of texts have different functions.The expressive text takes author’s thought as a core and the expressive elements should be emphasized in the process of translation.The informative text emphasizes the truth of the information and the effect of information delivery should be focused on during translation.The vocative text regards the target readers as a core and target readers’ response should be emphasized.In addition,he proposes two translation methods: semantic translation and communicative translation.Semantic translation pays attention to the delivery of accurate information of the original,which is adopted for the translation of expressive texts.Communicative translation attempts to produce an effect on its readers as close as that obtained on the readers of the original,which is adopted for informative and vocative texts.The two methods are not opposite and the combination of them could improve the quality of translation.。The translation material is an excerpt from an academic monograph.It is mainly an informative text,but also has features of expressive text and vocative text.The author of this thesis analyzed the language features of the translation material from word,sentence and discourse perspective,such as the frequent use of economic terminology,polysemy,acronym,figurative expression,long and complex sentence and passive voice,use of substitution as referential cohesion and parallelism as structural cohesion.Under the guidance of Newmark’s text typology theory,combing semantic translation and communicative translation,the author of this thesis explored general principles on translation of academic texts,and then discussed some translation strategies and translation methods through analyzing specific cases,such as literal translation,adoption of well-accepted translation,amplification,translation of passive voice,division and reshuffling and repetition instead of substitution.In conclusion,the author of this thesis holds that text typology is applicable on the translation of academic texts.In the E-C translation process on academic texts,translators need to convey accurate information of the source language and to improve the readability of translation so that the target readers could understand the original better. |
