As a China’s intangible cultural heritage,Qinqiang is the carrier of China’s traditional culture and an important content for the dissemination of Chinese culture abroad.Strengthening the translation and transmission of Qinqiang is a prerequisite for telling China’s stories to the outside world. Therefore,it is necessary for us to choose appropriate translation theories, draw on the translation experience of other traditional Chinese operas, and conduct research on the English translation of Qinqiang Opera based on its own artistic characteristics. The original text of this translated report is selected from a large-scale historical drama Guanxi’s Fuzi created by Shaanxi Provincial Opera Research Institute in 2020.Guided by the theory of multimodal discourse and the principles for multimodal discourse analysis established by Professor Zhang Delu, the author discusses the English translation of Qinqiang libretto Guanxi’s Fuzi from four aspects:cultural level, contextual level, content level and expression level. This report mainly discusses the translation of traditional Chinese cultural images and Shaanxi local dialects in the Qinqiang libretto Guanxi’s Fuzi through the cultural level, the translation of the figures of speech and Shaanxi dialects in this libretto through the contextual level, the translation of the dialogues and monologues in this libretto through the con tent level, and the translation of lyrics based on both auditory and visual mode in this libretto through the expression level. The translation practice shows that the multimodal theory has played a guiding role for the English translation of the Qinqiang libretto Guanxi’s Fuzi.Through the analysis of its language mode, visual mode and auditory mode, the textual meaning of the original text can be better reproduced, and the translation quality of the Qinqiang librettos can be improved.Qinqiang is one of the oldest opera forms in China, the study of the translation of Qinqiang librettos is of great significance to the construction of China’s national image and the promotion of Chinese culture and international status.
