| Since the thriving of multimodal discourse analysis in the last decade, many researchers started to pay attention to multimodal discourses.Multimodal discourse is the use of several modes to do communication, such as sounds, colors and words. With the rise of China’s international status and the implementation of the "going out" strategy of Chinese culture, the translation and research of Chinese operas gradually has attracted the attention of the academic circle. As an important branch of Chinese operas,Qin Qiang librettos are the multimodal discourse that integrates performability, literariness and musicality. It is of great significance to study translation of Qinqiang librettos from the perspective of multimodality.Based on the integration of multimodality theory research findings as well as on the comprehensive theoretical framework and related principles for multimodal discourse analysis constructed by Professor Zhang Delu, this thesis conducts the case study and translation research of Women Generals of Yangs from the perspectives of the visual, auditory and language modes constructed by Kress&Van Leeuwen, including the translation strategies on cultural level, context level, content level and expression level. The thesis mainly discusses translation of Chinese culture images and Shaanxi regional cultural images at the cultural level;translation of figures of speech and dialects at the contextual level;translation of dialogues based on interpersonal meaning and translation of monologues based on multimodal relations at the content level;and translation of lyrics based on visual mode and auditory mode at the expression level. The research proves that multimodality theory plays a guiding role in the translation process of Qinqiang librettos typical of dynamic multimodal discourses.Studies on the translation of Qinqiang librettos based on the language, visual and auditory modes can not only help fully perceive the overall meaning of the source text and hence improve the translation quality of Qinqiang librettos, but can also expand the breadth and depth of the application of multimodality theory, enrich the study of translation of Qinqiang librettos and helps spread Qinqiang culture to the outside world. |
