A Report On Chinese Translation Of Translation And Multimodality:Beyond Words (Introduction And Chapter 1)

Translation and Multimodality:Beyond Words,a collection of scholarly works edited by Monica Boria and others,is one of the first works to study how translation is redefined and reorganized in multimodal contexts.The author selects the Introduction and the Chapter 1(Transposing Meaning:Translation in a Multimodal Semiotic Landscape)as the source text to translate,totaling more than 22,000 words.The source text is difficult to translate because it contains many technical terms on translation and multimodal studies and abounds in long and compound-complex sentences.The translation problems are solved mainly under the guidance of Reiss’s translation strategy relative to the text type and function.In the case study,this report discusses how to faithfully and completely communicate information on multimodal translation to translation scholars from the sentence level.Specifically,the analysis focuses on three translation strategies:splitting,inversion and restructuring.Through the use of the translation strategies,the referential and conceptual information of the source text are fully transmitted in the translation.It is hoped that this translation and the report can render some assistance to the research and translation of long and compound-complex sentences in the informative text in the future.
