| Engineering text aims to convey the technical engineering knowledge. In recent years, due to the deterioration of ecological environment, human living space has been challenged so that we have to consider how to make the reasonable regional planning. Also, with the advance of “global integration” and “the Belt and Road”,the importance of engineering text translation has become increasingly significant.Translation of foreign engineering texts can be used for reference in Chinese engineering projects. At the same time, regional planning knowledge and human ecology can be brought to the masses, which can help to improve the regional utilization and contribute to the environmental protection. The source text is selected from Chapter1-2 of the engineering text Making Plans: How to Engage with Landscape,Design, and the Urban Environment, which mainly introduces how to work out the regional plan and the understanding of human ecology.Making Plans, selected as the translation material,is an informative text with professional words and complex sentence structures.Besides, the differences between Chinese and English in grammar and logic make it a challenge to represent coherence and information transmission function of the source text in the translation, which will be focused on in this report.Based on the above linguistic features, this translation practice report mainly conducts English-Chinese practice on two chapters excerpted from the Steiner’s engineering text Making Plans under the guidance of the variation theory. The report summarizes the translation practice from three aspects, vocabulary translation, sentence translation and text logic, which applies the variable translation methods including amplification, explanatory, division and compilation to the translation of nominalized structure, technical terms,multi-structured compound sentences and complex logical relationships, and closely combines translation theory with translation practice to convey the source text information accurately and smoothly.By making a conclusion, the report is expected to provide reference for the follow-up translation studies on engineering texts. |
