Practical writing of science and technology covers all aspects of social life, whichmakes the translation of English for specific purposes an important branch of translationstudies. Determined by its special stylistic features, translation of ESP also has itsparticularity. This report is written on the basis of the author’s translation practice of Englishmineral engineering texts.China is endowed with rich mineral resources and is one of the top countriesconducting large number of mineral engineering projects. Shanxi is a major energy resourceprovince whose prosperity relies deeply on mineral engineering. As a result, translationpractice and theoretical research on mineral engineering text are really important forindustrial development of Shanxi as well as the whole nation. The source texts were selected from the materials commissioned by the ChineseConstruction Company in Canada and the experimental group in College of MiningEngineering of Taiyuan University of Technology. They cover geological analysis report, land management and utilization in mining area, safety in mineral construction, technologyand equipment and other aspects of mining engineering. This report makes a review on the results of ESP translation from macroscopic researchlevel, microscopic research level and specific area research level. The general guidingtheory for the translation practice is German functionalist skopos theory. Under the guidanceof the skopos theory, by reviewing the relevant literature, some practical approaches areused to tackle different parts for translation. The report is divided into five chapters to describe the process of completing the translation task and explain some of the difficulties and solutions: Chapter One is a briefintroduction about the translation project; Chapter Two deals with literature review andtheoretical guidance; Chapter Three describes the process for the task; Chapter Fourpresents case studies and Chapter Five is a summary. The author hopes that this report willprovide a reference for the study of translation theory and practice of mineral engineeringEnglish text. |
