The ever-changing science and technology since the industrial revolution has greatly influenced human life and work.And the emergence of the internet has shortened distance between different places and accelerated information exchange.Therefore,science and technology communication between different countries has seen an unprecedented trend,which prompts translation of scientific texts.Scientific texts carry information in various science and technology fields with high objectivity,preciseness and accuracy.It contains a large number of professional terms,pictures and charts,long and complicated sentences and passive sentences to convey accurate information.This report is selected from the chapter 1 and 2 of Adult Learning in the Digital Age:Perspectives on Online Technologies and Outcomes,which introduces adults using emerging online tools to learn in the digital age and is a typical scientific book.Considering the role of the scientific texts to deliver information,the translator chooses the Skopos theory by Hans J.Vermeer as the guidance.This report can be divided into 5 parts:introduction,translation process,textual features and theoretical basis,case study and conclusion.The forth part case study is the main part,the translator uses skopos,coherence and fidelity rules to deal with difficulties in lexical,semantic and discourse level when translating English scientific texts.This report summarizes methods and ways to translate English scientific texts.It reveals that the Skopos theory is suitable to be the theoretical basis to deal with translation difficulties in scientific texts.Owing to various limitations,the translation of this report has to be improved and the methods and ways put forward by the translator must be verified.But the translator hopes that this report can provide translators who are dedicated into translating scientific texts with some experiences to improve translation quality,and help the further development of translating this type of texts.
