| In recent years,climate changes,such as global warming,sea level rise and heat waves,have imposed great impacts on human life and economic development.Human activities lead to increasing emissions of greenhouse gases,which contribute much to global warming.Therefore,mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions has attracted worldwide attention.Climate Intervention:Reflecting Sunlight to Cool Earth is a meteorological academic report that aims to introduce the impact of climate change and the role of climate intervention technologies in mitigating the greenhouse gas emissions,with a focus on the advantages and disadvantages of altering Earth’s albedo to cool the earth.The heavy use of non-finite-verbs is one of the important features of scientific English,in which non-finite verbs contribute a lot to the conciseness of the language and objectiveness of the described scientific facts.Correct translation of the non-finite verbs enhances accurate delivery of scientific information.Therefore,the translator chooses Climate Intervention:Reflecting Sunlight to Cool Earth as the material of the translation practice,and takes the non-finite verbs in the report as an example to discuss the translation strategies for meteorological scientific English.The first chapter of the translation report is the task description,which briefly introduces the content of translation material and the significance of the present translation practice.The second chapter describes the process of translation,which includes pre-translation preparation,translation process and translation proofreading.The third chapter is the theoretical framework,which mainly introduces Skopos Theory and its three translation rules(i.e.skopos rule,coherence rule,and fidelity rule)as well as the reasons for adopting Skopos Theory as theoretical guidance.The fourth chapter is case study.After a brief introduction of non-finite verbs in the translation material,the translator explores the translation strategies which include conversion,amplification and adjustment of word order for non-finite verbs in scientific texts based on the three rules of Skopos Theory.The fifth chapter is the summary,in which the translator sums up the findings and limitations of the translation practice.This translation practice not only deepens the translator’s understanding of Skopos Theory and its three translation rules as well as meteorological academic reports,but also improves the translator’s ability to analyze and summarize the translation strategies for common language phenomena in scientific texts. |
