A Report On The Translation Of The Age Of Oil (Chapter 9)

China is a major producer and consumer of petroleum energy,and the guarantee of petroleum energy security plays a crucial role in promoting social development.As energy security issues are widely concerned by the international community,the translation of petroleum energy text is also increasingly prominent.The source text of translation practice is selected from the ninth chapter of The Age of Oil published by CITIC Press Group in 2018.Chapter 9 of the source text mainly describes the specific characteristics of the changes in the international oil market,and further analyzes the importance of the development of national oil energy security from the theoretical level.Through the analysis of the text,the translator found that Petroleum English text has its characteristics in rigorous structure,distinct stylistic language and objective vocabulary.Under the guidance of the Skopos Theory,this report analyzes specific cases from three levels: vocabulary,syntax and discourse.At the lexical level,the source text is highly specialized in vocabulary and verb phrases appear frequently,therefore,this report introduces the Ellipsis of Word and the Conversion of modal verbs.At the syntactic level,the source text contains complex syntactic structures,diverse logical levels,and many coordinate sentences or compound sentences in coordinate form.Generally,the report adopts various translation methods such as Addition of Connectives and Inversion of sentence to make the context more coherent.At the textual level,the source text is more concerned with the integrity of the content,and things are mostly developed in the order from cause to effect,from hypothesis to inference.Consequently,Combination is mainly used to deal with the logical cohesion and coherence in the source text,so that the translated text will be more consistent with the expression habits of the target language readers.It is hoped that this translation practice report can provide some reference for the translation of the related texts and promote the exchange and research in this field.
